How you lead through change
Real leadership is rarely glamorous. We know that it’s not found in titles, applause or corner offices. It’s in the quiet moments when there’s nothing to gain: how you lead through change when no one is watching and how you respond when the credit goes elsewhere. At its heart, leadership is about stewardship, not status. All very well to say, but what does it look like in real life?A case study in building trust
Nothing stretches our leaders like times of change – and change has never been as rapid or unpredictable as it is now. But we had the pleasure of working with a client experiencing unprecedented change, and one of their leaders in particular had a huge impact through simple actions.- As is often the case, the CEO and HRD were centre stage – leading the transformation and managing the corporate comms and engagement, but the person who stood out was the CFO.
- She wasn’t the loudest person in the room but she consistently showed up: in town halls, team check-ins and 1:1s. Tirelessly, she explained what the numbers meant and where the uncertainties lay.
- She didn’t hide behind jargon or spreadsheets; she was just honest about what she didn’t know and met her promises to keep everyone updated, even when it was uncomfortable.
What we learned
- Her vulnerability built an invaluable amount of trust at a time of fear.
- Her consistency and calm helped others step into uncertainty with more resilience.
- Her style of leadership was open, honest and human – a powerful example of how you lead through change with integrity.
